Since SVA was established in 1966, over 800 volunteers have given over 750,000 hours in service. At one time the ambulance service was staffed completely by volunteers, however in 1996 SVA, like many other area ambulance services, was forced to rely on paid employees to meet the growing needs of the community. Today, SVA has approximately 55 volunteers, and 19 per diem employees.
Dispatcher:
Dispatchers are responsible for communicating with the Emergency
Communications Department (911), and securing crews for EMS
calls. Dispatchers also provide free blood pressure checks for
community members, first-aid for minor injuries, and operate the
Spencerport Lions Loan Closet.
Driver:
Drivers duties include transporting crews to and from emergency scenes, and patients to hospitals safely.
Medic:
A medic is a basic life support provider. Medics are responsible
for basic patient care including oxygen therapy, bandaging, splinting,
limited medication administration, and spinal immobilization. A
medic is capable of complete patient care.
ALS Technician: The Advanced Life Support (ALS) Tech is the most advanced crew member on the ambulance. They are responsible for the same duties as a medic; however they are capable of performing advanced procedures including: Intravenous therapy, medication administration, intubation, EKG interpretation, and more.
Special Service: Some SVA members volunteer services outside of the EMS field. While these members do not ride the ambulances, they volunteer their time in administrative duties.
